Small businesses of all types face challenge and struggle in a way that means adapting, pivoting and constantly reflecting and keeping an open mind. Something we often forget when it comes to food is that farmers are business owners too, small scale farming is running a small business. There is something that sets farmers apart though – and that is the fact that they work with Mother Nature – which you can’t always adapt and pivot to.
James and Jenny own Sundog Organic Farm, one of our favourite vegetable growers near Edmonton – our fridge always has a stock of their veg. At this time of year, it’s usually brimming with their produce but unfortunately, they’re facing a tremendous loss and have quite the fight moving forward to save their farm. We all know it’s been a wet spring, too much all at once has left their fields and crops too saturated to thrive. Their season will look quite a bit different and the future is unknown.
Like many vegetable farms in the area Sundog has a CSA (farm box) annually that brings weekly vegetables to their customers. CSA – community supported agriculture, that’s just what it is, agriculture, supported by the community. Members purchase their shares when farmers costs are high in the spring ahead of the season. Unfortunately, they’ve had to cancel their CSA program for the year due to the loss of crops. In addition, they are at Farmers Markets.
Sundog is part of the Awn community, and we are hosting a class and hope our community will join us to support Sundog Organic Farm. On August 22 at 5pm we’ll be hosting a class and dinner with profits going directly to Sundog to help them through this tough growing season. James and Jenny will be here to share their story and we’ll be cooking a summer inspired menu.
Included in the ticket price (per person) - a hands on class, dinner with wine and a recipe pack to take home.
